Page IV: Serving Others

Written By: Renee Johnson

We see in the Bible that we are not saved by our works or deeds, but by grace through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Acts 15:11, and Ephesians 2: 5-8). According to the scriptures, our Faith without works is dead, just as our body without the Spirit is dead (James 2: 14-17 and James 2:26). One example of good works (serving others) is mentioned in this Chapter 1 of James: To visit the fatherless, and widows in their affliction” (James 1:22-23, 1:27).There are many ways to serve.  I believe that serving is one of the most unselfish ways we can live. The benefits to using ourselves, or our talents, & gifts to help others not only is fulfilling to our life, but will also be rewarded by God in eternity (Revelations 20:12).It was once said that one of the richest places on earth is the cemetery, since this is where most dreams and ideas lay unfinished”.

Lets now look at some ways we all can be of service to someone…

- Visiting someone who is sick or in the hospital
- Giving someone a ride, who doesn’t have a car

- Making a phone call to someone who is lonely
- Babysitting for a couple, or single parent to give them a break
- Giving monetary gifts, food or clothing to help the poor, or victims.
- Offering comforting words to someone who has lost a loved one.
- Helping/ being of service in your local Church
- Sending a care package to our Service Men and Women
- Praying for someone, and / or just listening to their concerns
- Take a meal to someone who is unable to care for him or herself
- Adopt or Foster a child, or children

There are many ways to Serve, and just about everyone can help serve in some way. A good way to help those suffering from depression, or with suicide tendencies, would be to get them out and around accident victims, or visit the local burn centers, Intensive care units, homeless shelters, etc. The focus will instantly be on those who are much worse off.  I believe the spirit of gratitude will began to surface, not to mention how appreciative those less fortunate will be to have someone think about them. Our lives are busy, but I want to challenge you to once during your lifetime find ways to SERVE, and watch how your life will be changed forever…
